discography

Eliminate (CD 1992) The first Alloy record, and arguably the best record I ever made. We practiced eight times before we recorded it; practiced ten times before we went to Europe. Cover by Colin Sears (drums) and Roger Marbury (bass). Inspiration by the Gulf War. Click on the cover to hear Alloy, which began as jam Pat Mahoney (guitar) and I wrote in Pat's attic using a drum machine. Now that I've sold out, I promise I'll never quote Karl Marx in a song again.

Untied/Hard Rain (7" 1993) Only released in England. First recording featuring Pete Hines on drums. One of the rare moments I allowed myself optimism: Untied is about the end of the Cold War, which I thought might result in a peace dividend and some improvement in the lives of most people around the world. I should have known better. This single was number 1 on the NME alternative singles chart for one whole week. Wow.

Alloy (CD 1993) After our European tour in 1992, Colin flaked out and joined Down By Law, so we got former Cro-Mags drummer Pete Hines to step in. He was the most difficulty personality I've ever worked with, but a great player, as you can hear on this track, Hard Rain. We got this album, and three very rough tours out of Pete. Then he and Pat got into a fistfight, and Pete quit. Then Colin rejoined. Yes, rock bands are like soap operas.

Reading Blind/Eliminate (7") Single from the Alloy record. Click on the cover to hear the frontside. Updated version of Eliminate on the flipside. Art by Bill Wilson, the owner of Engine records, who did this, the Alloy record, and Paper Thin Front.

Razorwire (7" 1994) Half of a split 7" with Bob Evans. Click on the cover to hear it. My cousin Dave did the cover art.

My Tunnel (1994) We recorded this Germs cover during the same session we tracked the Husker Du cover. Live vocals, first take, with almost no rehearsals, and it shows. But what better way to capture the spirit of the Germs? There's an alternate take with vocals by Roger, Pat and Colin--and it's much better, especially with Colin's brilliant, hilarious singing.

Out on a Limb (1994) Mea culpa: The Huskers and Bob were great influences. Thought I would pay proper tribute with this track, for a Husker compilation. The other guys in the band didn't know the song, but hit it right on target anyway, first take. Roger dropped to B for the track. Absolutely the best noise guitar I have ever played.

Paper Thin Front (CD 1994) Last Alloy record. Colin kept flaking out on practices and gigs; this time Pat quit. Click on the cover to hear the title track. Mike Gitter still wishing he signed us in 1991.
